HBS Liquid Roofing were appointed to carry out the removal and replacement of the existing roof at the prestigious Sainsbury's headquarters building in Holborn, London.

After making recommendations for the new roofing system and design, HBS were successful in winning the project through competitive tender which was managed by Sainsbury’s FM company Interserve. The original 3,000 m2 inverted roof structure which was 12 years old, had a bridge deck roof coating and was in an extremely poor condition. The roof also required full edge protection and safety netting to comply with CDM 2007.

The large number of plant installations on the roof also added to the complexity of the project. This roof coating needed to be mechanically removed from the concrete roof substrate, which was done out of hours to reduce disruption to the Sainsbury’s staff, including the board of directors.

Following this, as approved applicators, HBS applied the liquid roofing waterproof membrane. The waterproofing was then fully tested and measured using an Electronic Leak Detection system which guaranteed the newly laid surface was 100% watertight. The insulation, shingle and paving slabs of the roof structure were then reinstated and upgraded to the latest part L requirements which included an addition of 80mm of extruded polystyrene. The project will be completed on time and adds to the portfolio of work HBS has delivered for Sainsbury’s over the last 8 years.
